In February 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced important updates to the Express Entry system to better align immigration with Canada’s labour market needs. The changes aim to attract highly skilled professionals and individuals with in-demand expertise who can contribute quickly to Canada’s economy.
What’s Changing?
Under the updated category-based selection approach, Canada will prioritize candidates in key sectors, including:
-
Foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience
-
Researchers and senior managers with Canadian experience
-
Transport occupations such as pilots, aircraft mechanics, and inspectors
-
Highly skilled military recruits with valid job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces
Existing priority categories — including French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, and skilled trades — will continue alongside these new targeted streams.
Further Express Entry categories will now require a minimum of 1 year of work experience, in an eligible occupation to qualify for selection, compared to six months in previous years. Some eligible occupations for existing categories have changed.
What This Means for Applicants
These updates strengthen Canada’s focus on selecting candidates who are well positioned to address labour shortages and support economic growth. For skilled professionals in high-demand fields, the changes may improve opportunities to receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry.
